This article deals with the causes of breast cancer. It is the cancer of the cells present in the breast. Both men and women can get this cancer and the symptoms vary from a lump in the breast to puckering of the skin, inverted nipple, Paget’s disease of the breast, discharge from a single nipple, pain, swelling, redness, itching, tingling, etc. All these symptoms do not happen at one time and each symptom can be a manifestation of another breast disease.

Let’s discuss the causes of Breast Cancer

The primary risk factors for both men and women are identified to be:

o Sex of the person
o Childbearing
o Hormones
o Age
o Alcohol intake
o High fat diet
o Obesity
o Tobacco
o Radiation
o Shift work

Some Causes:

o If you have personal history of cancer in one breast, then you have a higher risk of getting cancer in the other breast.
o Family History – A woman’s chances of getting breast cancer are higher if there has been such a case in the family. The risk is higher if the family member got it before the age of 40 years. If any other relative has cancer in her mother’s or father’s family, then also the risk increases.
o Certain women have different looking cells, which look abnormal under a microscope. If the woman has certain types of abnormal cells, like atypical hyperplasia and lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS), it increases the risk of breast cancer.
o Breast cancer is more often diagnosed in women of Caucasian descent than Asian, Latin or African American women.
o Physical inactivity can have an increased risk of breast cancer in women. Being active helps, as it may decrease the risk by avoiding weight gain and obesity.
o Tamoxifen may sometimes react unfavourably with certain anti depressants that are used for the prevention of breast cancer recurrence.

Being diagnosed with cancer can be a very hard time, not only for the patient, but also for family and friends. To better cope with this period, you can read some available cancer books that can shed some light on your queries. One such book is Secrets of Cancer Survivors by Elizabeth Gould.
