Early breast cancer has no symptoms.
The most common symptom is a lump or thickening that feels different from the rest of the breast tissue; but bear in mind that most breast lumps are not cancer – 80% of breast lumps considered suspicious enough for biopsy are found to be benign. In a woman under 50 they’re even less likely to be cancer.
Other possible symptoms of breast cancer are
nipple change – if it becomes inverted or changes its position or shape
rash – on or around the nipple
discharge – from one or both nipples
puckering or dimpling – around nipple
swelling – in your armpit or around your collarbone (from lymph nodes)
constant pain – in one part of your breast or in your armpit – though pain is rarely a symptom of breast cancer.
It’s important to know that breast cancer is almost unheard of in under 25s, fewer than 0.1% of all those diagnosed with it are under 30, only 5% are under 40 and most (80%) are over 50.
